"Twists and Terns"

"Simple Gifts"
Red Necked Grebes, when courting, offer gifts to one another as a sign of interest and affection. The female, in this case, is offering reeds and underwater plants to the male. They were courting on Goose Lake in Anchorage, AK in May 2012. This image was chosen to be one of the Top 100 images in the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) 2013 Showcase competition, out of over 2400 images submitted by photographers across the continent.

"Fancy Footwork"

These two Bald Eagles (one mature, one immature) are playing in the wind currents along a bluff near Deep Creek in Alaska. Bald Eagles do not get their iconic white head and tail feathers until they are 3-5 years of age.

"Taste of Spring"
This Verdin takes a bite out of a fresh bloom from the Palo Verde tree in Arizona. Verdin are tiny birds that flit and fly incessantly. Capturing one in such a pose as this is no easy feat!

"Moonhawk"

The December Full Moon in Arizona is my favorite moon of the year, given its early rise that coincides with sunset, making for lighter skies and beautiful horizons. On December 9, 2011, I was photographing the moon over Four Peaks Mountain and other nearby mountains from the edge of the Tonto National Forest in AZ. I was just about to put away my gear for the night, as I got the images I wanted and the moon had since risen beyond the peaks at too high of an angle to capture it beautifully for landscapes. Just then, a Harris Hawk flew atop a nearby Saguaro. I happened to have enough time to switch over to my 500mm lens + 1.4x teleconverter, mount it to my tripod (already set up), run about 50' to frame the shot, and grab this image before the hawk flew away. It all happened in seconds. What a moment!

"Arizona's Anna's"

This male Anna's Hummingbird was one of several hummingbirds that were truly a delight to photograph on 12/30/2011 in Gilbert, Arizona. Did you know that this bird is only as big as a ping-pong ball and weighs no more than a nickel (coin)? Incredible (and tough, but beautiful to photograph!). This was taken in natural light. The background is a bush in the distance with dead leaves--giving it the warm, uniform tone. The blur is caused by the distance between the bird and the bush--and the low aperture setting (f/6.3, 1/1000sec, ISO 200, 700mm focal distance).
