This pigeon guillemot needed a running start to take off in the Gulf of Alaska. I love this shot as it captures bird's aquatic equivalent of, "Eat my Dust!" It tells a story about the entire moment--given that the splashing water left behind as the bird bolts off is in crystal clear focus with the bird already having moved off beyond the focal range. To me, this tells a much different and interesting story than one where the bird is the focus alone, in this specific case. No one cares much to see an image of the south end of a bird heading north just by itself--but add the drama of the splashing water, which lends a sense of movement and energy---and voila! A wonderful moment captured!
