Red Necked Grebes, when courting, offer gifts to one another as a sign of interest and affection. The female, in this case, is offering reeds and underwater plants to the male. They were courting on Goose Lake in Anchorage, AK in May 2012. This image was chosen to be one of the Top 100 images in the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) 2013 Showcase competition, out of over 2400 images submitted by photographers across the continent.
