This Ring-Necked Pheasant topped off a perfect afternoon of bird watching on my last day of a 4-day wildlife photography trip to California in March 2011. It became the 100th species of bird I located just as I was heading back toward my car after a hike to photograph shorebirds. This beautiful male had the sun on his back and seemed to be totally enjoying his strut through the reeds and wild plants of the area.
Given these birds are hunted, a dear friend of mine (also a bird watcher) upon hearing the call of a Ring-Necked Pheasant, jokingly says it's calling out, "Crockpot!" As if it spots one nearby and is hurrying to run in the opposite direction! If you have ever heard this bird's call, you'll know exactly what I mean!
