Wild Horses of the Salt River

Wild Horses of the Salt River

This series of the Wild Horses of the Salt River captures them in their iconic local grounds -- in and around the Salt River in the Tonto National Forest-- just outside of the Phoenix, Arizona area.

The added flowers represent the tamarisk and wild  plants that often live in and along the riparian area of the Salt River, many of which the horses feed upon for survival, but also cause environmental concerns to this fragile ecosystem. (Wild horses feed on tamarisk can serve as a means of reducing the Tamrisk, an invasive species.)

This one-of-a-kind piece features images photographed in Arizona by local artist, Lisa Langell, then processed via her proprietary, multi-step, formula before being printed on 100-year archival, 300 GSM Warm Tone Cotton Rag Matte paper. A layer of handmade mulberry paper is also often added for texture. Hand-deckled edges finish each print. The mounts are created from reclaimed wood and trimmings that artist, Lisa Langell, self-sourced across Arizona.  Each piece is personally signed by Lisa Langell.

Sandhills of Whitewater Draw

Sandhillls of Whitewater Draw

Sandhill Cranes are truly special, almost mystical birds.  With a wingspan of nearly seven feet, they are also quite impressive on the wing or engaging in their leaping and bobbing courting dance on the ground.  These cranes were photographed at Whitewater Draw, Arizona.  A unique location in southern Arizona where thousands of these cranes overwinter.
